In the Great Groove Band, school-age musicians (ages 4-17) bring acoustic instruments and voices to various festivals around the Northeast. In approximately six hours of focused rehearsal over the course of the event, they experience the joy of not just listening but MAKING music – learning, arranging, and performing tunes and folk songs by ear.

Working cooperatively as a band, instructors help the Great Groove Band members prepare up to three numbers for a Sunday afternoon performance on the Festival main stage! The band’s transformation from chaos to harmony is both remarkable and predictable, proving that music truly is our birthright!

Donna Hébert developed this long-running performance program for children with Andy Spence at the Old Songs Festival in 1998. Mary Lou Troy and Fred Kaiser added the program to the Philadelphia Folk Festival in 2006, where it has its own distinct personality. Since then it has been brought in various iterations to festivals throughout the Northeast.

Teaching Philosophy

Making Singing fun and Approachable for singers at all levels!

Music belongs to everyone, and singing is our most accessible and universal instrument! Everyone deserves the chance to sing confidently, joyfully, and feel at home on a stage! I work with my students on the key components of vocal technique so they can learn to utilize efficient breath for great vocal support, sing without tension, access their full vocal range, and develop the confidence to take their performances to the next level! Whether you’re a young person discovering a love for musical theater and auditioning, a professional musician working on bringing your best to the stage with your band, a casual singer hoping to crush it at your next karaoke night, or just want to sing for the fun of it, I can tailor your lessons to meet your goals!

My Approach

Learn ConcreTe Technical Skills!

I focus on teaching a base of robust technical support so my students learn to sing with a strong foundation, developing habits that will protect their voice for a healthy future in their singing practice. I draw on the technical skills I learned at the Tisch School of the Arts CAP21 Musical Theater program at NYU, adding in tips and tricks I’ve learned personally in over a decade working as a professional musician and voice teacher.

I have developed unique and fun explanations and approaches to vocal technique to effectively teach students of all ages, learning styles, and experience levels.

Work on songs and styles you love!

As a voice teacher and vocal coach, I love working with students with a broad spectrum of goals, skills, and backgrounds! My own musical interests are eclectic and as a result, I am comfortable singing and teaching in a wide variety of singing styles, from classical to musical theater to folk to rock! In each lesson, emphasis is placed on having fun while singing and working in the student’s choice of musical style, so each singer can move forward with their own individual goals!

Gain confidence & Conquer Stage Fright!

I have extensive experience working with students who have stage fright, anxiety, or even trauma surrounding singing. I am an exceptionally welcoming and approachable instructor with the ability to build up my students’ confidence and make suggestions, corrections, and adjustments in a gentle manner without being hypercritical. Working with me has given my students the tools to overcome stage fright and heal their past experiences surrounding singing, and move forward to sing joyfully in the world!

Find YOUR uniquely beautiful Voice!

Each person’s unique sound and singing voice is valuable and deserves to be heard. As such, I encourage input and opinions from my students about what different vocal sounds and styles they enjoy both in other artists and in their own practice so that we can develop the best version of each individual voice.
